Enrollment 101: Parent FAQ

Your student has been accepted to CSU? Welcome to the family, Buccaneer Parent!
Below are some common questions from parents/guardians as you assist your student through their admissions process.

    What now?!

Congratulations! Here's our advice for parents/guardians of newly admitted Buccaneers: 1) Encourage your student to keep an eye on their Status Page; all important information about dates, to-do items, accessing Enrollment 101, and more can be found in the Status Page; and 2) Stay in close contact with your Enrollment Counselor. They are your point-of-contact for everything until classes begin!

What items are now needed for my student's file?
As an admitted student, your future Buccaneer now has a "Ready to Sail" section on the Checklist of their Status Page (charlestonsouthern.edu/IamCSU or apply.charlestonsouthern.edu/apply/status). That list will change throughout the enrollment process, so it's important to check regularly!

What is the difference between the Ready to Sail and other section(s) of the Checklist?
The Ready to Sail Checklist includes all of the items your student needs to complete before they begin classes (or move on campus if they will be a resident student). The other tab(s) of the Checklist do also need to be submitted, but not with the same urgency as the Ready to Sail items.

What does it mean that my student is required to complete 099-level coursework?
Based on admission materials, CSU offers students the opportunity to take intro-level Math and/or English before beginning college-level Math and/or English. Students take their 099-level coursework alongside other regular CSU coursework, with CSU professors and other CSU students, and are still just as much a part of campus life as any other student.
    * For most of our majors, this additional requirement does not affect a normal four-year plan. Some exceptions are our Nursing and Engineering majors, but please confirm with your Enrollment Counselor if you have questions.
    * South Carolina does not consider the 099-level courses to be college-level for Life Scholarship purposes. If your student is eligible for the Hope or Life Scholarship, we recommend working with their academic advisor to ensure that renewal eligibility is met.

How do we pay the Enrollment Deposit?
The Enrollment Deposit can be submitted through your student's Application Status Page. The Enrollment Deposit will be applied as a credit on the bills of your first two semesters (half to each).

How can my student access MyCSU or their BucMail account?

All instructions for MyCSU, BucMail, and much more can be found through Enrollment 101 (no log-in required).

    When is Accepted Student Weekend?

ASW is held in April each year; keep an eye out for more information! Invitations will be sent via email, and your student will also be able to sign up through their Status Page.

When can my student register for classes?
Students can register in-person at one of our Registration events (Accepted Student Weekend or a Registration Day), or through an online form submission. Once registration opens, we will send instructions to your student via email and in their Status Page.

How can my student take a placement test?
CSU's placement exams are available on-campus (no cost) or virtually ($28/test). Students who are required or recommended to complete placement exams prior to registration will be sent instructions for signing up, but contact your Enrollment Counselor if you have questions!

Where can we access my student's financial aid offer?
Your student should receive an initial academic scholarship offer via email and through their Status Page within a few days of their acceptance. After your FAFSA has been received and processed, your full aid offer will be available through Financial Aid Live (MyCSU / Financial Aid tab / FA Live). Your enrollment counselor will go over this offer, any additional documents needed, and any questions you have!

    When are bills available?
    * Preliminary bills, reflecting credit from anticipated financial aid, are typically available a few months prior to the start of each semester, as long as your student is registered for classes. These preliminary bills may change until the end of the Drop/Add period. While preliminary bills are updated monthly, you can access your current student account at any time through MyCSU (Student tab, My Account History section); this account balance reflects current activity of payments and charges.
    * The true bill for the semester will be available after the Drop/Add period, and students are financially responsible for their charges at this point.

When is my student account bill due?

Families have two options for for each semester:
    1. Submit payment in full by the first day of the semester.
    2. Enroll in a Monthly Payment Plan, which is available through the Student tab of MyCSU.
Please note: if financial aid documents are still missing, the Financial Aid Office will not apply those scholarships/loans/etc. as credits to your bill. It is important to turn in documents as quickly as possible to ensure your bill is correct.

How can my student change their major?
Until their first semester begins, your student can change their major online here (also linked on their Status Page). After they start classes, they should instead use the form under the Student tab in MyCSU.

What does my resident student need to bring to live on campus?
A packing list can be found online here. Also, check out the FAQ videos for each residence hall online here!
